What building with us actually looks like.
A custom home is a long project. Fourteen to eighteen months of building, and several more before that in design and planning. Knowing how it goes — before you start — is most of what keeps it from feeling chaotic. Here's the shape of it.

Start to finish.
- 01
The first conversations.
Before anything is drawn or priced, we talk. About your land, how you live, what you're really after. If you don't have an architect or designer yet, this is where we help you find the right ones. The goal of this stage isn't a contract. It's figuring out whether we're the right team for your build — honestly, both directions.
- 02
Design and planning.
Working with your architect and designer — yours or ones we connect you with — the home takes shape on paper. We're in the room for this, not waiting for it to land on our desk. Pricing develops alongside the design, so the budget conversation is honest the whole way, not a surprise at the end.
- 03
The land and the groundwork.
Soil, survey, permits, site work, foundation. The unglamorous part that everything else stands on. We handle the coordination — the engineers, the inspectors, the trades — so the picture stays whole.
- 04
The build.
Framing through finish. This is the long stretch, and it's where the same people who planned your home are now building it. You'll always know where things stand, because everything still routes through us.
- 05
The final walk and warranty.
We don't disappear when you move in. The build carries through warranty, with the same owners answering the phone. How we handle the last one percent is how you'll remember the whole thing.
Built to be seen up close.
The work below is about the details — the parts of a build most people never stop to look at, and the parts we care about most. Our first Black Oak homes are underway, and this page grows as they come together.

Wondering whether you're ready to start stage one? That's exactly what the Readiness Scorecard is for.

“How you do one thing is how you do everything.”
We took that one from Will Guidara. It's the whole idea behind Black Oak. The framing you'll never see, the email at 7am, the back side of the cabinet — we build all of it like it's the part you'll be looking at. Because eventually, it's all the part you live in.
Built to last. Rooted in craft.
